How debates are judged — Debate and group discussion

Judges usually mark three things. Content: strong evidence, clear reasoning, relevant examples, correct facts. Style: a clear, steady voice, eye contact, confident posture, good pace and pauses. Strategy: a clear team plan, answering the opponents, good use of time and linking with teammates. A common split is content 40, style 40 and strategy 20 — so marks of 32, 28 and 15 make 75 out of 100.

Debater's tip

What, how and the plan — “content is what you say, style is how you say it, strategy is how you plan and answer”

  1. Content (what you say): evidence, reasoning, examples, facts.
  2. Style (how you say it): voice, eye contact, posture, pace. Strategy (how you plan): team plan, answering opponents, time, teamwork.
  3. Total = content + style + strategy; winning margin = bigger total − smaller total.

Use it for: Preparing for contests, giving feedback in a debate club and judging a class debate.

Worked example: 📝 Under which judging area is “good use of time” marked? → strategy

  1. Using your time well is part of planning how you fight the debate.
  2. So it is judged under strategy.

Check: Practise aloud: give a 1-minute speech, then ask a friend to give you marks for content, style and strategy and add them up ✓
