The evaluator’s view — Debate and group discussion

A GD evaluator watches how you take part, not how long you talk. Marks come from clear, relevant points, listening to others, polite disagreement, leading without bossing, bringing in quiet members and a good summary. Marks are lost for talking over others, saying nothing, going off topic, personal comments, repeating others and losing your temper. To judge a GD scene, find the member who helped the whole group.

Debater's tip

Quality, listening, teamwork — “evaluators reward clear points, listening, polite disagreement and fair leadership”

  1. Earns marks: clear, relevant points; listening; polite disagreement; leading without bossing; a good summary; bringing in quiet ones.
  2. Loses marks: talking over others, saying nothing, going off topic, personal comments, repeating others, losing your temper.
  3. In a scene, the best member is the one whose behaviour helps the whole group think and agree.

Use it for: Preparing for GD rounds in school selections, college admissions and interviews, and giving feedback in class.

Worked example: 📋 In a group discussion on “Are board games better than screen games?”, Arjun only repeated what others had already said; Riya started with a clear fact and later summarised both sides; Kabir laughed at a classmate’s idea. Who did best? → Riya

  1. These lose marks: Arjun only repeated what others had already said; Kabir laughed at a classmate’s idea.
  2. Riya started with a clear fact and later summarised both sides — that helps the whole group, so Riya did best.

Check: Practise aloud: after a family GD, tell each person one thing that earned marks and one thing to improve, kindly ✓
