Summarising a GD — Debate and group discussion

At the end of a GD, one or more members may be asked to summarise. A good summary restates the topic, gives the main points in favour, the main points against and where the group agreed — in about a minute, fairly and without new arguments. A poor summary gives only your own view, adds a new point, leaves out one side or blames others.

Debater's tip

Short, balanced, nothing new — “gather the group’s main points fairly in about a minute”

  1. Order: restate the topic → points in favour → points against → where we agreed.
  2. Good: both sides, the main points, short and clear, neutral, key facts, a clear last line.
  3. Poor: only your view, a new point, a long repeat of everything, leaving out a side, blaming others.

Use it for: The end of a GD, meeting minutes, project reports and class discussions.

Worked example: 🧾 Good or poor summary: adding a new point? → a poor summary

  1. A summary only gathers what the group already said; a new point would start the discussion again.
  2. So adding a new point is part of a poor GD summary.

Check: Practise aloud: summarise a family GD in under one minute — topic, points for, points against, where you agreed ✓
