The grammar rule

Ask “what does it do?” — “the word that answers this question is the verb”

  1. Find who the sentence is about (the subject).
  2. Ask: what does (or did) the subject do?
  3. The word that answers is the verb. Names and things are nouns; describing words are adjectives.

Use it for: Every grammar lesson after this one — tenses are all about verbs — and making your own sentences.

Worked example: Which word is the verb (action word)? “Manav flew a red kite yesterday.” → flew

  1. What did Manav do? He flew a kite.
  2. Manav is a name, red is a describing word, kite is a thing — flew is the action.

Check: “Manav flew” makes sense on its own; “Manav red” and “Manav kite” do not ✓
