    How to say it

Excuse me + could you…, please? — “Polite words make every request softer”

    1. Start a request with 'Excuse me' and end with 'please': Excuse me, could you move a little, please? (माफ़ कीजिए, थोड़ा खिसकेंगे?)
    2. Say 'Sorry' for small mistakes and 'Thank you' for any help — to a guard, a driver or a shopkeeper too.
    3. Signs use short commands: No + noun/-ing (No parking), Keep + direction (Keep left), Do not + verb (Do not touch).
    4. In a queue ask 'Is this the line for…?' and say 'After you' to let someone go first (पहले आप).

Use it for: Queues at ticket counters, metro stations, hospitals, malls, lifts, roads and any crowded public place.

Worked example: Excuse me, could you move a little, please?

    1. Try each option in the gap: could / did / are.
    2. Use 'could' for a polite request: Could you…? (विनम्र अनुरोध के लिए could)

Check: I can ask someone to make way politely and explain what 'Mind the gap' means ✓

    ✏️ Practice

Read the Hindi or listen (🔊), choose or build the English and press Check. Stuck? Press “Show me how”.
