Make the Target — questions

How do you play the 24 game?

You get four numbers. Combine all four — each exactly once — with adding, taking away, multiplying and dividing (and brackets) so that the answer is 24. For 3, 3, 8, 1: (8 + 1) × 3 − 3 = 24.

Is every puzzle solvable?

Yes. A computer checks every puzzle before you see it, and you can always skip to see one solution. Often there are several ways.

Can I join numbers, like 1 and 2 to make 12?

No — each card is one number. You can use brackets as much as you like, and fractions in the middle are allowed on classic and hard.

Which level is right for my child?

Easy (whole numbers, targets 10–30) for ages 9–10, classic 24 for 10+, and hard (numbers up to 13) for confident older children.
