Blood relations — Logical reasoning for kids

Ravi’s father’s only son’s sister — who is she? Read the chain one step at a time and draw a small family tree. “Only son” and “only daughter” are the big clues.

How to think it through

Step by step — “replace each “’s” with the person it names, starting nearest to the child”

  1. Start with the person and go one “’s” at a time: father’s → the father; his only son → …
  2. “Father’s only son” for a boy is the boy himself. “Father’s father’s only son” is the father.
  3. Name the last person from the child’s side: mother’s brother = uncle (mama), father’s sister = aunt (bua), brother’s daughter = niece.

Use it for: Blood relation questions in reasoning tests, and family trees in social studies.

Worked example: Ravi is a boy. How is Ravi’s father’s only son’s sister related to Ravi? Sister

  1. Ravi’s father’s only son is Ravi himself (a boy with no brother).
  2. So the person is Ravi’s own sister.

Check: Father → only son (Ravi) → his sister ✓
