How to think it through

Draw the path — “mark each walk and turn on paper; the straight line home is the distance”

1. Draw North at the top, East on the right. A right turn moves clockwise (N → E → S → W), a left turn anticlockwise, turning around is two turns.
2. Walks back the same way cancel: 10 m East then 4 m West leaves 6 m East.
3. Two walks at a right angle make a right triangle: distance² = first² + second² (3, 4, 5 and 6, 8, 10 are handy).

Use it for: Direction questions in Olympiads and aptitude tests, reading maps, and finding your way.

Worked example: Kabir walks 6 km North, then turns right and walks 8 km. How far is he from the starting point now, in a straight line (in km)? → 10
