Subtracting money — Money maths for kids

Subtracting money tells you how much is left after you spend, or how much more one thing costs than another. Take away the ones first; if there are not enough ones, borrow a ten.

The method

Column take-away — “take away the ones, borrowing a ten if needed, then the tens”

  1. Write the bigger amount on top, ones under ones.
  2. Take away the ones. If the top digit is smaller, borrow 1 ten (10 ones).
  3. Take away the tens. Check by adding the answer back.

Use it for: Money left after shopping, the difference between two prices, and Class 2 money worksheets.

Worked example: ₹72 − ₹35 = 37

  1. Ones: 2 is less than 5, so borrow: 12 − 5 = 7.
  2. Tens: 6 − 3 = 3. So ₹37.

Check: 37 + 35 = 72 ✓
