Rupees and paise — Money maths for kids

One rupee is 100 paise, so ₹2.50 means 2 rupees and 50 paise (250 paise). Small paise coins are rare today, but prices like ₹12.50 are still common. To add or subtract, work in paise and change back at the end. We write ₹12.50 as 12.5 in answers.

The method

Work in paise — “turn rupees into paise, do the sum, then turn back into rupees”

  1. ₹1 = 100 paise. Rupees → paise: × 100. Paise → rupees: ÷ 100.
  2. To add or subtract, change both to paise, work, then change back.
  3. Write the answer in rupees without trailing zeros: ₹12.50 → 12.5, ₹20.00 → 20.

Use it for: Prices with 50 paise, petrol and vegetable prices, and Class 3 money chapters.

Worked example: ₹12.50 + ₹7.50 = 20

  1. In paise: 1250 + 750 = 2000 paise.
  2. 2000 paise = ₹20.

Check: ₹20 − ₹7.50 = ₹12.50 ✓
