Shopping with a price list — Money maths for kids

A price list tells you what each thing costs. To shop, find the prices you need, then add them for a total, multiply for many of one thing, or subtract to find money left or the difference.

The method

Read, then work — “find each price in the list first, then do the sum”

  1. Find the price of each thing in the list.
  2. Together → add. Many of one thing → multiply. Money left or how much more → subtract.
  3. Most and least: compare all the prices.

Use it for: A school stationery shop, a fruit stall, a canteen menu, and Class 1–2 shopping worksheets.

Worked example: Price list: pencil ₹5, eraser ₹3, ruler ₹10, kite ₹15. How much do a pencil and a kite cost together (in ₹)? → 20

  1. Pencil ₹5, kite ₹15.
  2. 5 + 15 = 20.

Check: ₹20 − ₹15 = ₹5, the price of the pencil ✓
