Beginning sounds g–l — Phonics for kids

Now the letters g, h, i, j, k and l. Your child hears a word, looks at the pictures and finds the word that starts with the letter — goat for g, hat for h, kite for k.

How the sounds work

Listen to the first sound — “say the word slowly — the very first sound tells you the letter”

  1. Say each picture word slowly and listen to the start.
  2. Match the first sound to the letter: goat starts with g, lion starts with l.
  3. If two pictures start with the same sound, they start with the same letter.

Use it for: Learning letters g to l, reading names and labels, and early spelling.

Worked example: Which word starts with the letter “g”? → goat

  1. Say each word slowly and listen to the very first sound: heart, jar, goat.
  2. “goat” starts with the letter “g”: g … goat.

Check: g… goat; heart starts with h and jar with j ✓
