Beginning sounds m–r — Phonics for kids

The letters m, n, o, p, q and r. Some questions show a picture with the first letter missing — your child says the word and chooses the letter that starts it.

How the sounds work

Listen to the first sound — “say the word slowly — the very first sound tells you the letter”

  1. Look at the picture and say its name slowly: m… monkey.
  2. The first sound tells you the missing letter.
  3. q is almost always followed by u: queen, question.

Use it for: Learning letters m to r, writing the first letter of words, and early spelling.

Worked example: 🐒 _onkey — which letter is missing? → m

  1. Look at the picture: 🐒 is “monkey”. Say it slowly.
  2. The first sound is m. Only “m” spells “monkey”: m-o-n-k-e-y.

Check: m + onkey = monkey ✓
