Magic e — Phonics for kids

How the sounds work

The e makes the vowel say its name — “a silent e at the end turns a short vowel into a long one”

1. Look at the end of the word: vowel, one letter, then e?
2. If yes, the e is silent and the vowel says its name: k-i-t-e → kite.
3. Without the e the vowel is short: kit.

Use it for: Reading long-vowel words like cake, bike, bone and cube, and spelling them with the e.

Worked example: Add a magic e to “kit”. Which word do you get? → kite
