Your voice: volume and pace — Public speaking for kids

Your voice has a volume knob and a speed knob. In a big hall or outdoors you speak louder (project, don’t shout); close to a microphone or in a quiet room you speak softer. Slow down for dates, numbers, hard ideas and your main message; speed up only a little for an exciting moment.

Speaker's tip

Back row, steady pace — “speak so the last row hears, at a pace everyone can follow”

  1. Volume: louder for a big hall, the playground or a noisy place; softer near a microphone or in a quiet room.
  2. Pace: about 120–150 words a minute; slow down for numbers, hard ideas, young listeners and your key message.
  3. Helpful habits: belly breathing, speaking to the back row, finishing every word. Unhelpful: mumbling, shouting, rushing, trailing off.

Use it for: Classroom talks, assembly, outdoor events, reading notices and any time you use a microphone.

Worked example: 🔊 You are speaking in a large hall with no microphone. What should you do with your volume? → speak louder

  1. A large hall with no microphone: your voice must travel far.
  2. So you should speak louder — project to the back row.

Check: Practise aloud: read one paragraph so someone at the far end of a room hears every word, then read it again slowly enough to count to 2 at each full stop ✓
