Dialogue and words for said — Creative writing for kids
Dialogue is what characters say. The exact words go inside speech marks, with the comma, question mark or exclamation mark inside too. Words like shouted, whispered, asked, giggled and sobbed show HOW something was said.
Inside the marks — “spoken words and their end mark go inside “ ”; pick a said-word that shows how”
Put the exact spoken words inside “ ”.
End them with a comma, a question mark (for a question) or an exclamation mark (for a shout) INSIDE the closing mark, then who said it and a full stop.
Choose the said-word by the words: a question → asked, danger → shouted, a secret → whispered, a joke → giggled, sad news → sobbed.
Use it for: Writing conversations in stories and comics, and direct-speech questions in tests.
Worked example: Which sentence is punctuated correctly? → “Help, the boat is sinking!” shouted Vihaan.
The choices: “Help, the boat is sinking”! shouted Vihaan. · “Help, the boat is sinking!” shouted Vihaan. · Help, the boat is sinking! shouted Vihaan.
The exclamation mark belongs inside the closing speech mark, and the spoken words need speech marks.
Check: Everything Vihaan said, including the !, is inside “ ” ✓
Work it out in your head or on paper, then tap your answer — or type it and press Check. Stuck? Press “Show me how”.
