Point of view: first or third person — Creative writing for kids

Point of view is who tells the story. In first person, the storyteller is in the story and says I, me and my. In third person, someone outside tells it, using names and he, she, his and her.

Writer's tip

Who is telling? — “I / we → first person; a name, he or she → third person”

  1. Look for I, me, my, we, our → first person.
  2. Look for a name, he, she, his, her → third person.
  3. Keep one point of view all through your story.

Use it for: Writing diaries and personal stories (first person) or tales about others (third person), and point-of-view questions.

Worked example: Is this sentence written in first person or third person? → third person

  1. The sentence: “Kabir flew his kite from the rooftop.”
  2. It uses a name (Kabir) and “his”, not I or my — so it is third person.

Check: In first person it would be “I flew my kite from the rooftop.” ✓
