A fable is a short story, often about animals, that teaches a lesson called the moral. To find the moral, ask: who made a mistake, and what did they learn?
What was learnt? — “the moral is the lesson the character learns”
Find the character who makes a mistake or changes.
Ask what they learn at the end.
Choose the moral that matches THAT lesson — not just any good advice.
Use it for: Panchatantra-style stories in class, writing your own fable, and “what is the moral?” questions.
Worked example: Read the fable. What is its moral (lesson)? → Plan ahead and save for hard times.
The fable: All summer, a squirrel stored nuts in a hollow tree while a rabbit played all day. When the cold, bare months came, the rabbit had nothing to eat. The squirrel shared a few nuts, and the hungry rabbit learnt to save food every summer.
The rabbit did not save and went hungry; then it learnt to save food. The lesson is about saving for hard times.
Check: The rabbit’s change at the end matches the moral ✓
Work it out in your head or on paper, type the answer and press Check. Stuck? Press “Show me how”.
