Linking words in an argument — Debate and group discussion

Linking words show how your ideas connect, so listeners can follow your reasoning. Because, the reason is and due to give a reason. So, therefore and as a result show a result. For example, for instance and such as add an example. However, but and although show the other side.

Debater's tip

Show how ideas connect — “reason, result, example or the other side — pick the word that shows the link”

  1. Reason: because, the reason is, due to, this is because.
  2. Result: so, therefore, as a result, that is why. Example: for example, for instance, such as.
  3. Other side: however, but, although, on the other hand.

Use it for: Every debate speech, GD point, persuasive essay and answer that asks “why?”.

Worked example: 🔗 What does “therefore” do in an argument? → shows a result

  1. “Therefore” means “so” — what follows comes from what was said before.
  2. So it shows a result.

Check: Practise aloud: give a 30-second argument for a school garden using “because”, “for example”, “however” and “therefore” ✓
