Logical fallacies for kids — Debate and group discussion

A fallacy is an argument that sounds convincing but has a mistake in its reasoning. Attacking the person criticises the speaker instead of the idea (“Ignore Meera’s plan — she is always late”). Everyone does it says something is right because many people do it. A slippery slope claims one small step will surely lead to disaster. A false either/or pretends there are only two choices when there are more.

Debater's tip

Name the broken step — “find where the reasoning goes wrong and name it calmly”

  1. Attacking the person: “Don’t listen to him, he…” — the idea is ignored.
  2. Everyone does it: “All my friends do it, so it must be fine.” Slippery slope: “If we allow one…, soon…”.
  3. False either/or: “Either we…, or…” when other choices exist. Point it out calmly and explain why it proves nothing.

Use it for: Listening to the other side in a debate, judging adverts and forwards, and checking your own arguments.

Worked example: 🚩 Which fallacy is this? “If we allow one extra break, soon there will be no lessons at all.” → slippery slope

  1. One extra break is said to lead, step by step, to no lessons at all — a disaster that does not have to follow.
  2. So it is a slippery slope.

Check: Practise aloud: make up one example of each fallacy about school lunch and explain to a partner what is wrong with each ✓
