How to draw a butterfly — easy step-by-step drawing for kids

Draw a butterfly in 6 simple steps. In every picture the new lines are orange and the lines you have already drawn are grey — so you always know what to add next.

Start drawing

Step by step

  1. Step 1

Draw a long thin oval for the body.

  2. Step 2

Add a round head and two curly antennae.

  3. Step 3

Draw the two big top wings — the same on both sides.

  4. Step 4

    Add two smaller bottom wings.

  5. Step 5

Draw circles on the wings — whatever you draw on one side, draw on the other.

  6. Step 6

Add small dots to finish the pattern, then colour both sides to match!

Drawing tips for kids

✏️ Draw lightly first

Use a pencil and press softly — light lines are easy to rub out.

🔍 Look at the orange lines

Each step adds only the orange lines. Everything grey is already on your paper.

🔵 Start with big shapes

Circles, ovals and triangles first; small details like eyes and whiskers last.

🎨 Colour it in

Go over the final lines with a dark pencil or pen, then colour your picture any way you like.
