An adjective describes a person or thing (a careful driver); an adverb describes how the action is done (she drives carefully). Words like always, often and never are adverbs too.

The grammar rule

How is it done? — “an adverb describes the verb; most are adjective + -ly”

  1. Adjective + -ly makes most adverbs: careful → carefully, happy → happily, gentle → gently.
  2. Special ones: good → well, fast → fast (never “fastly”).
  3. Always, often, usually, never go just before the main verb: She often eats rice.

Use it for: Making your writing exact and lively, and adjective/adverb questions in tests.

Worked example: Tara is a good singer. She sings ___. → well

  1. The gap tells HOW she sings, so we need an adverb, not the adjective “good”.
  2. The adverb of good is well.

Check: “She sings well” — “sings good” is a common mistake ✓
