The grammar rule

as … as, -er than, the -est — “positive for equal, comparative for two, superlative for the whole group”

  1. Two things with “than” → comparative: taller, bigger, happier, more beautiful.
  2. One out of a whole group, with “the” → superlative: the tallest, the biggest, the most beautiful.
  3. “as … as” → positive. Special: good → better → best; bad → worse → worst. Never use “more” and -er together.

Use it for: Comparing things in essays and answers, and degree-change questions in Class 6–10 grammar.

Worked example: Fill the gap: The Ganga is ___ than the Yamuna. → longer

  1. Two rivers are compared with “than”: we need the comparative.
  2. long → longer → longest, so: longer.

Check: The Ganga is the longest river in India — so it is longer than the Yamuna ✓
