The grammar rule

The pattern tells the tense — “every tense has its own helping verbs and verb form”

  1. Simple present: base or -s form. Simple past: V2 (went). Simple future: will + base.
  2. Present continuous: am / is / are + -ing. Past continuous: was / were + -ing.
  3. Present perfect: has / have + V3. Past perfect: had + V3.

Use it for: Tense identification questions in school tests, and checking that your own story stays in one tense.

Worked example: Name the tense: “Saanvi has helped Grandma.” → present perfect

  1. The verb is “has helped”: has + past participle (V3).
  2. has / have + V3 is the present perfect tense.

Check: With “had helped” it would be past perfect; with “has” it is present perfect ✓
