The grammar rule

Match the subject — “one person or thing takes is / has; I takes am; you, we, they and many take are / have”

  1. I → am. He, she, it, one name or one thing → is. You, we, they, two names, many things → are.
  2. He, she, it, one name → has. I, you, we, they → have.
  3. In a question the verb comes first: Are you ready? Is she at home?

Use it for: Describing yourself and others, writing about your family and pets, and the first sentences of every essay.

Worked example: The children ___ ready for school. → are

  1. “The children” means more than one child.
  2. More than one takes “are”: The children are ready for school.

Check: Change it to one child: “The child is ready” — so many children → are ✓
