The grammar rule

was / were + -ing — “for an action that was going on at a moment in the past”

  1. Time words: when the phone rang, when Mum came home, at 8 pm yesterday.
  2. I / he / she / it / one name → was + -ing. You / we / they / many → were + -ing.
  3. The short action that “interrupts” is in the simple past (the phone rang).

Use it for: Setting the scene in stories, saying what you were doing at a certain time, and reports.

Worked example: My friends ___ cricket when the phone rang. → were playing

  1. The game was going on at the moment the phone rang: past continuous.
  2. “My friends” is more than one, so use were + -ing: were playing.

Check: One friend: “My friend was playing”; many friends: “were playing” ✓
