Homophones by sound — English pronunciation practice

Homophones are words that sound exactly the same but are spelt differently and mean different things: night and knight, see and sea, flour and flower. Knowing them helps you pronounce tricky spellings (knight, weight, whole) and spell words you hear.

How to say it

Same sound, different spelling — “homophones sound exactly alike — the meaning tells you the spelling”

  1. Say the word aloud — if two spellings sound the same, they are homophones.
  2. A silent letter often hides a homophone: knight = night, whole = hole, knew = new.
  3. Choose the spelling from the meaning.

Use it for: Dictation, spelling tests, and reading words with silent letters.

Worked example: Which word sounds exactly like “knight”? → night

  1. The k in knight is silent: it is said “nite”.
  2. “night” is said “nite” too — the same sound, a different meaning.

Check: knight = night = “nite” ✓
