Minimal pairs practice — English pronunciation practice

A minimal pair is two words that differ in just one sound: ship/sheep, vest/west, sea/she, thin/tin, pan/fan. This practice mixes all of Part 1. Listen to (or read) a sentence and choose the word that fits — then say the sentence aloud yourself.

How to say it

One sound changes the word — “listen to the sentence: the meaning tells you which word of the pair is right”

  1. Say both words of the pair and find the one sound that changes.
  2. Use the meaning of the sentence to choose.
  3. Say the whole sentence aloud with the right sound.

Use it for: Revising all the sounds of Part 1 before the -s and -ed endings.

Worked example: Choose the right word: “Dad uses a razor to ___.” → shave

  1. Say both words: save – shave. Only the first sound changes.
  2. With a razor you shave: lips pushed forward for sh.

Check: Dad uses a razor to shave ✓
