Weak forms — English pronunciation practice

Small words have two pronunciations. In the middle of a sentence they are weak and quick, usually with the “uh” sound: I want “tuh” go, a cup “uv” tea, fish “n” chips. At the end of a sentence or in a short answer they are strong: Who is it FOR? Yes, I CAN.

How to say it

Small words shrink in the middle — “to, for, and, can, of, at, from and was are weak inside a sentence and strong at the end”

  1. In the middle of a sentence: weak — to (tuh), for (fuh), and (n), can (kun), of (uv).
  2. At the end of a sentence or a short answer: strong — Where are you FROM? Yes, I CAN.
  3. Never stress a weak form unless you want to make a point.

Use it for: Natural, fluent speaking and understanding fast English in films and calls.

Worked example: In “Who is this parcel for?” is “for” said weak or strong? → Strong (full sound)

  1. “for” is the last word of the question.
  2. At the end of a sentence it keeps its full, strong sound.
