    How to say it

    This is… speaking. / Please hold on. / Can I leave a message? — “Call, answer and pass on messages clearly”

    1. Start: Hello, this is Arjun. / Arjun speaking. / May I speak to…? / May I know who is calling?
    2. Wait or pass on: Please hold on. / He is not at his desk. / Can I leave a message? / Please ask him to call me back.
    3. Bad line: Sorry, you're breaking up. / Can you hear me now? / Could you speak a little louder?
    4. End: Thanks for calling. / I'll call you back in ten minutes.

    Use it for: Office calls, calling a college or clinic, delivery calls, customer care, calling relatives on a weak network.

    Worked example: May I speak to Mr Iyer?

    1. Try each option in the gap: to / at / for.
