Anchoring a school event — Public speaking for kids

The anchor (compere) is the guide of the show. A school programme usually runs: opening (welcoming guests, lighting the lamp, the prayer song, the welcome address), middle (dances, skits, songs, recitations) and closing (prize distribution, the vote of thanks, the National Anthem). The anchor introduces each item briefly, thanks the performers, invites guests and closes the event.

Speaker's tip

Guide the show — “introduce, thank, invite and close — in the running order”

  1. Running order: opening → performances → closing (prizes, vote of thanks, National Anthem last).
  2. Anchoring lines: introduce an item (“Next, Class 4 presents…”), thank performers (“Let’s give them a big round of applause”), invite a guest (“May I request our chief guest…”), close (“Please stand for the National Anthem”).
  3. Get the running order beforehand, check every name, and calmly fill any gap.

Use it for: Annual Day, Sports Day, Independence and Republic Day programmes, inter-house events and class parties.

Worked example: 🎙️ What is the anchor doing with this line? “Please stand for the National Anthem.” → closing the event

  1. The National Anthem is the very last item of a school function.
  2. So the anchor is closing the event.

Check: Practise aloud: write and say a 3-line anchoring script — introduce a dance, thank the dancers, invite the next item ✓
