Welcome speech and vote of thanks — Public speaking for kids

A welcome address comes near the start of a function: it greets the chief guest, the Principal, parents and friends. The vote of thanks comes at the end, just before the National Anthem: it thanks the chief guest first, then the Principal, teachers, performers, support staff and the audience. Both should be short, warm and sincere.

Speaker's tip

Welcome first, thank last — “greet the guests at the start; thank everyone who helped at the end”

  1. Welcome address: near the start — “A very warm welcome to our chief guest…”, “We are delighted to have all the parents with us.”
  2. Vote of thanks: at the end — the chief guest first, then the Principal, teachers, students, support staff and the audience. “Last but not least…” leads to the final thanks.
  3. Keep both short and sincere; say every name correctly.

Use it for: Annual Day, Sports Day, exhibitions, farewells, special assemblies and club events.

Worked example: 🙏 When is the vote of thanks usually given? → at the end of the event

  1. The vote of thanks thanks everyone for the whole event, so it comes after everything else.
  2. It is given at the end of the event, just before the National Anthem.

Check: Practise aloud: say a 4-line vote of thanks for your class event, thanking the chief guest first and ending with “Thank you all” ✓
