Speaking to different audiences — Public speaking for kids

You talk differently to your best friend and to a chief guest. Formal language — “Respected judges”, “I would like to begin by” — suits assemblies, debates, Annual Day and interviews. Informal language — “Hey guys!”, “Guess what happened!” — suits lunch breaks and family chats. Young children need short, simple words.

Speaker's tip

Audience first — “decide who is listening, then choose formal or informal words”

  1. Formal: Annual Day, welcoming guests, debates, the assembly news, interviews, a vote of thanks.
  2. Informal: chatting with friends, birthday parties, family talk, calls with grandparents.
  3. Think about the audience first: their age, the occasion and what they already know. In formal speech say “going to”, not “gonna”.

Use it for: Choosing words for assembly, competitions, interviews, guests, younger classes and family events.

Worked example: 🎩 Should your language be formal or informal for welcoming the chief guest? → formal

  1. A chief guest is an honoured visitor at a school event.
  2. So welcoming the chief guest needs formal language.

Check: Practise aloud: tell the same news twice — once to a friend (“Guess what!”) and once to the Principal (“I am happy to share…”) ✓
