Strong openings — Public speaking for kids

The first few seconds decide whether people listen. A question hook makes them think (“How many of you walked to school today?”), a story hook pulls them in (“Last monsoon, my brother and I found a tiny kitten…”), and a fact hook surprises them (“An octopus has three hearts.”). A weak opening — “Um, so, I guess…” or an apology — loses them.

Speaker's tip

Hook them first — “open with a question, a story or a surprising fact”

  1. Question hook: ask something the audience can answer in their heads, then pause.
  2. Story hook: start in the middle of a tiny true moment. Fact hook: one short, surprising, true fact.
  3. Avoid weak openings: “sorry”, “um, so”, or just announcing the topic. Keep the opening to a few sentences.

Use it for: Starting any speech, debate, assembly talk, presentation or story.

Worked example: 🪝 What kind of opening is this? “How many of you walked to school today?” → a question hook

  1. The speaker asks the audience something they can answer in their heads.
  2. So it is a question hook.

Check: Practise aloud: write three openings for a talk on water — a question, a story and a fact — and say each one with a pause after it ✓
