Opening, body and closing — Public speaking for kids

A good speech is like a sandwich. The opening greets the audience, hooks them and introduces the topic. The body — the longest part — gives 2 or 3 main points, each with facts, reasons or a short story. The closing sums up, gives a call to action, thanks the audience and ends with a memorable line.

Speaker's tip

Tell, explain, remind — “open with the topic, explain your points, close by reminding them”

  1. Opening: greeting, hook, topic, a preview of the points.
  2. Body: the main points (about 2 or 3 in a short speech), each with an example or a reason.
  3. Closing: a summary, the call to action, thanks and a memorable last line.

Use it for: Planning any speech, essay-style talk, presentation or debate turn.

Worked example: 🧱 What is the right order of a speech? → opening, body, closing

  1. First catch attention and give the topic, then explain the points, then wrap up.
  2. So the order is opening, body, closing.

Check: Practise aloud: give a 1-minute talk on “My school” with one opening line, two points and one closing line ✓
