Using examples and stories — Public speaking for kids

“Water is very important” is a vague claim; “Our class saved about 40 litres a week by closing taps fully” is a specific example people remember. A short story with a setting (where and when), a problem (what went wrong) and a solution (how it was fixed) makes a point come alive. Keep it short, link it to your point and never share someone else’s secret.

Speaker's tip

Show, don’t just tell — “prove each point with a specific example or a short story”

  1. A specific example names who, what, where or how much; a vague claim does not.
  2. A story has a setting, a problem and a solution — keep it short and link it to your point.
  3. Choose examples that really support the point, and use your own experiences, not other people’s private matters.

Use it for: Persuasive speeches, debates, assembly talks and presentations that need proof.

Worked example: 🔎 Is this a specific example or a vague claim? “Reading is good for everyone.” → a vague claim

  1. It does not say who, what, how much or what happened.
  2. So it is a vague claim.

Check: Practise aloud: tell a 30-second story with a setting, a problem and a solution that proves “Friends help us” ✓
