Memorable endings — Public speaking for kids

People remember the last thing they hear. End with a call to action (“Pick up one wrapper on your way out today”), a summary of your points, or a link back to your opening story. Avoid weak endings like “Um… yeah, that’s it” or an apology, never add a new point, and finish with a calm “Thank you” and a smile.

Speaker's tip

End strong, end on time — “close with one strong line, then say “Thank you””

  1. Call to action: tell the audience one thing to do. Summary: repeat the main points in one line.
  2. Link to the opening: return to the question or story you began with.
  3. Weak endings: trailing off, “that’s it, I think”, apologising, adding a new point or running over time.

Use it for: Closing speeches, debate turns, presentations and assembly talks.

Worked example: 🏁 What kind of ending is this? “Start today: carry a cloth bag every time you shop.” → a call to action

  1. The line tells the audience to do something, starting today.
  2. So it is a call to action.

Check: Practise aloud: say a strong last line for a talk on trees, pause, then say “Thank you” with a smile ✓
