Word tip

Meaning first, then spelling — “decide what the sentence means, then pick the word with that meaning”

  1. Decide what the sentence needs: an action (verb) or a thing (noun)? affect / advise are verbs; effect / advice are nouns.
  2. Use memory tricks: stationEry has e for envelopes; stationAry has a for “at rest”; dessert has a double s for “sweet stuff”.
  3. Read the finished sentence and check the meaning.

Use it for: Essays, letters and exams — these are the mistakes examiners notice most.

Worked example: Pick the right word: The bus was ___ at the red light. → stationary

  1. A bus at a red light is not moving.
  2. stationary = not moving (stationery means pens and paper).

Check: stAtionAry — the bus is At rest ✓
