Idioms and phrases — Vocabulary words for kids

An idiom is a group of words whose meaning is different from the meanings of the single words. “It’s raining cats and dogs” has nothing to do with animals — it means it is raining very heavily.

Word tip

Not what the words say — “an idiom has a hidden meaning — think of the situation, not the picture”

  1. Do not picture the words literally.
  2. Think of the situation where people use the idiom: “The test was a piece of cake” = it was very easy.
  3. Idioms are fixed — learn them whole, word for word.

Use it for: Making your writing lively, idiom questions in Class 6–10 tests, and understanding stories and films.

Worked example: What does the idiom “once in a blue moon” mean? → very rarely

  1. A “blue moon” happens very seldom.
  2. So “once in a blue moon” means very rarely.

Check: “I eat ice cream once in a blue moon” = I eat it very rarely ✓
