The schwa is the most common sound in English: a short, relaxed “uh”. It lives in weak (unstressed) syllables, whatever the spelling — the a in about, the o in lemon, the a at the end of sofa. Saying every vowel fully (“a-bout”, “le-mon”) makes speech sound heavy.
