    How to say it

    kn → n, wr → r, mb → m; silent h in hour, l in walk — “-ed = /t/, /d/ or /id/; -s = /s/, /z/ or /iz/”

    1. Silent K, W, B: knife, know, knee (नाइफ़, नो); write, wrong; comb, climb, thumb. Don't say 'k-nife' or 'climb-b'.
    2. Silent T, L, H, G: listen, castle; walk, talk, half; hour, honest; sign, foreign.
    3. -ed: /t/ after p, k, s, sh, ch (helped, walked); /d/ after other voiced sounds (played, cleaned); /id/ after t or d (wanted, needed).
    4. -s / -es: /s/ after p, t, k (cups, books); /z/ after voiced sounds (pens, bags); /iz/ after s, sh, ch, z (buses, watches).

Use it for: Reading aloud, sharing news at the office, telling past stories (I walked, I wanted), and talking about plurals in shops.

Worked example: Cut the onion with a sharp knife.

    1. Try each option in the gap: knife / nife / knive.
    2. knife is spelt with a silent K — K लिखा जाता है पर बोला नहीं जाता।

Check: I say knife, listen and walk without the silent letters, and walked, played, wanted the right way. ✓
