Rehearsing a presentation — Public speaking for kids

Silent reading is not rehearsal. Practise out loud, standing up, with a timer, using short cue cards with key words only, numbered in order. Practise in front of family to get feedback, start a week early, and check the room, slides and microphone before the event. If your run is too long, cut and time it again.

Speaker's tip

Rehearse like the real day — “practise aloud, standing up, with a timer and your cue cards”

  1. Good: practising out loud, standing, timing each run, short numbered cue cards, practising for family, checking slides and the room early.
  2. Poor: only reading silently, never timing yourself, skipping the ending, first try on the day, reading a full script.
  3. Cue cards: key words only, numbered in speaking order.

Use it for: Before class presentations, competitions, assembly duties and interviews.

Worked example: 🗂️ What should you write on a cue card? → key words only

  1. A full speech on a card makes you read instead of speak.
  2. Write key words only, to remind you of each point.

Check: Practise aloud: rehearse your talk twice standing up with a timer and cue cards, and ask one listener for one tip ✓
