Handling questions politely — Public speaking for kids

Questions mean people were listening. Listen to the whole question, thank the asker, answer briefly and check it helped (“Does that help?”). If you don’t know, say you will find out — never make up an answer. If you didn’t hear, politely ask them to repeat it. Never call a question silly.

Speaker's tip

Listen, thank, answer, check — “let them finish, thank them, answer briefly and honestly, check it helped”

  1. Steps: 1 listen to the whole question, 2 thank the asker, 3 answer briefly, 4 check if it helped.
  2. Polite: “Great question — thank you.”, “I am not sure, but I will find out.”, “Could you please repeat the question?”
  3. Impolite: “That is a silly question.”, “I already said that.”, “Ask someone else.” Take questions one by one, fairly.

Use it for: Q&A after presentations, science fair judging, interviews, debates and vivas.

Worked example: 🙋 You don’t know the answer to a question. What is best? → say you will find out

  1. Making up an answer can spread wrong information; honesty is respected.
  2. So say you will find out — and do it.

Check: Practise aloud: ask a family member to quiz you on your topic and answer each question with “Thank you for asking” first ✓
