Slides that help — Public speaking for kids

Slides support your talk; they are not your script. In any slides app, keep one idea per slide, a few words in big, readable text (about 28–32 point or more), dark text on a light background and a clear picture. Avoid paragraphs, tiny text, many fonts, yellow on white and spinning effects — and never read every slide aloud.

Speaker's tip

One idea, few words — “each slide shows one idea in a few big words; you do the talking”

  1. Good: few words, big text, one idea per slide, short bullet points, a title on each slide, one style throughout.
  2. Poor: full paragraphs, tiny 10-point text, ten fonts, low contrast (yellow on white), flashy effects, too many bullets.
  3. The audience should listen to you; the slide only helps them see the idea.

Use it for: Class presentations, project talks, science fairs and school competitions.

Worked example: 🖥️ Which slide is better for a class talk? → 6 words, big font

  1. Ninety words in a tiny font cannot be read from the back, and people stop listening.
  2. Six words in a big font are read in a glance — that slide is better.

Check: Practise aloud: make one slide with 6 words and present it for 1 minute without reading the slide ✓
