Poems to think about — Reading comprehension for kids
Class 6 poems paint pictures with words. Questions ask what a line describes, how the poet feels, which words rhyme, and what a word or phrase means in the poem. The answer is always in the lines — read them closely.
What the poet sees and feels — “find what the poem describes and how the poet feels about it”
Read the whole poem aloud once.
Find the lines that answer the question.
For feelings, look for feeling words; for meaning, read the line around the word.

Worked example: Where does the tree stand? → Beside the village well
Read the passage: Beside the village well it stands, / With roots that hang like old men’s hands. / The farmers rest beneath its shade, / Where children’s games and swings are made. / The parrots chatter on its crown, / The squirrels scamper up and down. / A hundred summers it has seen, / And still its leaves are fresh and green.
Find the line with the answer: “Beside the village well it stands,”
These words give the answer: Beside the village well.
Check: The line “Beside the village well it stands,” gives exactly “Beside the village well” ✓
