Word tip

Syllable by syllable — “say the word slowly in parts and check the tricky letters”

  1. Say the word slowly, syllable by syllable: Feb-ru-ar-y, sep-a-rate.
  2. Find the tricky part: double letters (necessary, address, committee), ie or ei (believe, receive), silent letters (Wednesday, foreign).
  3. Use memory tricks: there is “a rat” in sep-a-rat-e; necessary has one Collar and two Sleeves.

Use it for: Spelling tests, dictation, essays and exams — and writing without a spell-checker.

Worked example: Which spelling is correct: seperate, separate or separete? → separate

  1. Say it in parts: sep-a-rate. There is “a rat” in the middle.
  2. The correct spelling is separate.

Check: sep-A-RAT-e ✓
