Word tip

Find the link — “say how the first pair is linked, then use the same link for the second pair”

  1. Make a sentence for the first pair: “A doctor works in a hospital.”
  2. Use the same sentence for the second pair: “A teacher works in a ___.”
  3. Common links: opposites, young ones, homes, sounds, tools, workplaces, part and whole.

Use it for: Verbal reasoning in Olympiads, scholarship and entrance tests, and sharpening how you think about words.

Worked example: Complete the analogy: Doctor is to hospital as teacher is to ___. → school

  1. Link: a doctor works in a hospital (worker → workplace).
  2. A teacher works in a school.

Check: “A teacher works in a school” — the same link as doctor and hospital ✓
