Every home is full of words: rooms like the kitchen and bedroom, furniture like the sofa and cupboard, and useful things like the broom, the tap and the fridge. Knowing what each one is for helps you name it quickly and use it in a sentence.

Word tip

Picture it — “see the thing in your mind, then match the word to what it does”

  1. Picture the thing in your mind: where is it, and what do we do with it?
  2. Match the word to its job: a fridge keeps food cold, a broom sweeps the floor.
  3. Sort words into groups — rooms, furniture, things we eat with, things we wear — to spot the odd one out.

Use it for: Talking and writing about your home, describing pictures, and the first English words lessons at school.

Worked example: Which word means “keeps food cold”? → fridge

  1. Picture the kitchen: which thing keeps milk and vegetables cold?
  2. It is the fridge — “fridge” means keeps food cold.

Check: Say it in a sentence: “We keep milk in the fridge so it stays cold.” ✓
