Words at school — Vocabulary words for kids

School has its own words: places like the library and canteen, people like the principal and librarian, and things in your pencil box like the eraser, ruler and sharpener. Each word names something with a clear job.

Word tip

What is it for? — “every school word has a job — find the job and you find the word”

  1. Ask what the thing or place is used for: we borrow books from the library.
  2. People at school are named by what they do: a teacher teaches, a librarian looks after the library.
  3. Read the whole sentence before you choose — the other words are clues.

Use it for: Talking about your school day, writing “My School” essays, and following classroom instructions.

Worked example: Fill the gap: My pencil is blunt; I need a ___. → sharpener

  1. A blunt pencil has no point.
  2. The thing that gives a pencil a point is a sharpener.

Check: “My pencil is blunt; I need a sharpener” — an eraser or ruler would not help ✓
