Family words — Vocabulary words for kids

Family words tell us how people are related: your parent’s brother is your uncle, your uncle’s child is your cousin. In Hindi there are separate words for the mother’s side and the father’s side — Nani and Dadi, Mama and Chacha.

Word tip

One step at a time — “work out a relation step by step: whose son, whose daughter?”

  1. Break the relation into steps: “my father’s brother” = my father → his brother = uncle.
  2. Your parent’s parent is a grandparent; your parent’s brother or sister is an uncle or aunt; their child is your cousin.
  3. Your brother’s or sister’s son is a nephew; their daughter is a niece.

Use it for: Writing “My Family” essays, drawing a family tree, and talking about relatives at festivals.

Worked example: Fill the gap: My uncle’s son is my ___. → cousin

  1. My uncle is my parent’s brother.
  2. The child of an uncle or aunt is a cousin.

Check: My uncle’s son and I share grandparents — that makes us cousins ✓
